History:

Wood Island Life Saving Station, c. 1908. Portsmouth Harbor - Kittery, Maine.

For as long as I could remember, the Lifeboat Station on Wood Island had loomed in skeletal form at the mouth of the Piscataqua river. Over the years, I have spent many summer days exploring its splintered rooms and collecting fragments of pottery from the silent shore. Before the current structure was built in 1908, the Island was used as a quarantine for prisoners of the Spanish - American War that suffered from Yellow Fever. The current structure was taken over by the US Navy during World War II. The Island was used as a point to protect the Shipyard from German U-Boats, and abandoned shortly after in the postwar period.

Recently, the Life Saving Station has been the subject of a major restoration project. Read more here: https://woodislandlifesaving.org/
